Director of Curriculum and Library Services

Joan Freedman is an experienced educator, who taught for 30+ years in Jewish day schools and congregational schools in Philadelphia and New York. In addition to Joan’s teaching experience, she created curriculum and programs as director of a preschool and Jewish family life education. Before joining Hillel in 2005, Joan helped pioneer the educational program at Shalom Street and served as director of SAGE. Joan loves working with children and their teachers to help inspire a passion for life-long learning through creative and critical thinking. The world of literature is just one of many paths to open new doors for learning experiences. Joan is married to Head of School Steve Freedman and together they have four precious children.

Dana Friedman Librarian




Dana Friedman has been teaching at Hillel since 2010.  Dana graduated from the University of Michigan School of Information, where she specialized in school library media.  She works with both students and teachers to facilitate access to information in a wide variety of formats, instructs students and teachers how to acquire, evaluate and use information and the technology needed in this process, and introduces children and young adults to literature and other resources to broaden their horizons.  Dana loves literature and technology, and is passionate about teaching these important skills to her students.  She and her husband Jonathan have a three year old son named Benjamin, and a brand new baby girl named Elizabeth.
